I'm pretty new here (And don't post on reddit), but I am hoping you guys could help me out.
I just purchased a
SuperMicro 4U 36 bay chassis with a X9DRi-LN4F+ Motherboard on a whim and a dream.
My plans for this box will be to build a larger home media server, 20+TB, host a fast database, as well as likely run some automated programming for trading purposes (Futures, Forex, etc). For the latter reason I am strongly leaning toward a Windows Server 2012 (or Windows 10) build. I can be swayed however.
I realize i've probably bought more than i need, but that's my MO.
So I'm asking for help choosing processors, memory, drives.
My initial thoughts are 2
Xeon 2637 like this one. I am assuming this motherboard can handle Engineering Spec CPU's.
64GB DDR3 ECC Ram. Is there anything wrong with that RAM? The price is right up my alley. 2 SSD drives for the OS, and an unknown number of storage disks. For the storage disks, I'd wait until a good sale and make a bulk purchase. I'd hope to use 4TB or larger.
The box i bought comes with a hardware RAID card, and if i go windows i'm assuming i'll utilize it. I was considering FREENAS as well, but that was before i decided to get such a strong system. I'm thinking I can use this for many activities. I have a nice server rack, in the basement, where it can be loud and whatnot if it needs to be.
Any advice is helpful. I'm good with a computer, just never built a server like this before. Thanks in advance.
